The Overland Mailbox with Ipe Wood is classic and beautiful. With simple clean lines, it looks good just about anywhere. This is a statement piece for your new home or an excellent replacement for that old stone slab that’s seen better days. This version, with Ipe wood cladding on the front, will age gracefully and last just about forever.

The Ipe used will come to you in a rich buttery brown color. It is an incredibly hard wood that handles weather well - without maintenance, it will turn to a silvery gray.

Both the 12" x 18" and 18" x 18" models must be mounted directly to a concrete pad or existing concrete footing because of their weight. You can find a drawing of the bolt-hole layouts for both models by scrolling through the listing photos.

We build and deliver this mailbox in clean raw hot rolled steel. Much like the grain in wood, this dark steel finish comes with a variety of heat marks from the raw steel cooling in the steel mill. Most people let this mailbox develop a handsome rust patina over time. The pictures show it at the tail end of this process as well as the raw steel look as we deliver it.

LOCKING: We offer our Overland series in NON-LOCKING and LOCKING versions. The Locking option adds a door behind the main front door with a slot at the top.

FLAG: We now offer two choices of flags when purchasing your mailbox, a steel flag, or a red powder-coated flag.

SHIPPING: This product ships via LTL Freight. At checkout, you will be able to select from commercial, residential, and lift-gate service options for delivery. PLEASE BE AWARE that the freight carrier only offers curbside delivery and will not drive their truck onto your driveway or move the shipment to its desired location. Please provide a phone number for delivery coordination.

WEATHERING: As with all of our raw steel products, the hot rolled steel will eventually develop a brown/orange rust patina over time with natural weathering. The rate at which this rusting happens varies with exposure to the elements and climate. Style & Material

All Steel: Hot Rolled Steel is a type of steel that is formed by heating above its recrystallization temperature, followed by rolling it at a high temperature. This manufacturing process creates a coarse surface texture known as mill scale, which consists of iron oxides that adhere tightly to the surface and can equate beautiful and unique patterns on the metal. Upon the development of a rust patina, the mill scale will become indiscernible.

Ipe Wood: Ipe wood (“ee-pay”) is a Brazilian hardwood that is highly valued for its striking brown and amber hues, as well as its remarkable density which provides superior performance. Ipe is known for its durability and natural resistance to decay, rot and damage. Without any maintenance, Ipe will naturally oxidize over time, resulting in a charming silver gray tone. This process does not cause any harm to the wood and has no impact on its structural stability.

12" x 18" : This size comes with a post that we provide and can be anchored as is, to any existing concrete or stone pad. The post is built out of a ¼” steel plate and is welded to a 20” long, 3” x 3” steel tube to be set into concrete. The holes in the ¼” plate line up with the anchoring holes in the base of the mailbox, allowing for easy installation.

18" x 18": As a result of the increased weight, this size does not come with a post and must be mounted directly to a concrete pad or existing concrete.

From the moment the steel arrives at our shop in Austin, TX, the magic begins. It all starts with the delivery of high-grade steel, which is then carefully inspected and prepared for laser cutting. Our state-of-the-art CNC laser precisely cuts out each individual part and address number, ensuring accuracy and consistency.

Once all the parts are cut, our skilled welders take over and carefully assemble the mailbox. Each weld is done with precision to ensure that the mailbox is strong and durable. After welding, the mailbox is thoroughly cleaned to remove any debris or excess metal dust. Our attention to detail extends to the installation of the wood on the front, which adds a touch of warmth and elegance to the mailbox. Each board of Ipe is hand matched, sanded and stained. The flag is then carefully attached, ensuring that it functions properly.

We ordered the overland mailbox and couldn’t be happier with the quality of the product. It’s exactly as advertised and is high quality materials and construction. Better, almost, was our service experience with Bold Mfg. They modified the product after we ordered it (ordered without a lock and then decided to add it) and sent the base plate in advance so that we could have our hardscape contractor install it before the rest of the mailbox was fabricated. They were super friendly and easy to work with. If you like what you see online, I’m certain you won’t be disappointed.

If you are looking for a signature curbside mailbox, the Overland Steel Mailbox will give your home that little bit of extra design not found in an ordinary “big box” option. The build quality is excellent. Customer service/shipping was great. Installation is easy if you have a few hours and don’t mind getting a little dirt under your nails. Highly recommend.
